Senegal, with its incredibly rich coastline, relies heavily on traditional fishing as a primary source of livelihood for its people, even as industrialization grows. Thousands of fishing boats, from small to large, set sail daily from coastal cities like Dakar, Saint-Louis, Kayar, and Mbour to supply hotels, markets, and restaurants with fresh seafood. Hundreds of colorful wooden "pirogues" depart at dawn, returning in the afternoon with their catch, which is then transported to cold storage or the local fish market by horse-drawn carts.
